Rao, Gopinath clinch 10k purse in fishermen dinghy contest
Fishermen dinghy race organised on Friday at the Beach festival attracted huge crowd at Corbyn’s Cove on Friday. The Secretary of Fisheries, Mr Ramesh Verma flagged off the race as the chief guest. Altogether, 13 fishermen dingies participated in the race which was supervised by a team of 12 staff from the Fisheries Department on two rescue boats.
The pair of Mr. Yadav Rao and Gopinath on boat no. 7 beat their competitors to clinch the first cash prizes of Rs 10,000 in the contest, which was held to and fro Corbyn’s Cove and Snake Island. Mr. A Kumar Swamy & V. Giri (Boat no. 12) and Mr.P. Dhanpal & Y. Gopi (Boat No. 8) bagged the second and third prize for Rs 8000 and Rs 6000 respectively in the contest. All the other participants were awarded consolation prizes of Rs 2500 each. In the beach volleyball tournament for the girls division held on Friday, the team of Black Ink beat Amsa-A in straight sets; (2-15) , (1-15). Altogether, six matches were played in the category today and the two semi-finals are scheduled to be held between 2 Star & Black Ink and Terresa Vs New Pahargoan tomorrow.
National Youth Day celebrated
The Ramakrishna Mission here celebrated National Youth Day to mark the birthday of Swami Vivekananda on Friday. More than 500 students and students, teachers from different schools in the city participated in the rally, which passed through vantage points of the city. Citing some famous quotations of Swami Vivekananda, participants spread the message of humanity, compassion etc during the rally. Students from RBV School, Boys School, Carmel, Nirmla, Model, Girls School, Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Mohanpura School, JNRM, DBRAIT, TGCE, ANCOL, Sports Authority of India and RK Mission participated in the rally.
Ananda Marga wards celebrate Sports Day with gusto
Students of Ananda Marga School here celebrated their 3rd Annual Athletic Meet with enthusiasm on Friday. The Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, Mr Udit Prakash Rai declared the sports meet open as the chief guest at Junglighat School Ground, while the Chairperson, Municipal Council, Mr Indrapal Singh graced the occasion as the guest of honour. In his address, the Deputy Commissioner spoke about the importance of sports activities. “Sports help us develop a healthy lifestyle as also learn values such as team work, fair play, teamwork, discipline etc.” He also lauded the efforts of the organizers for conducting the meet. Besides track and field events, games such as balloon race, sack race, frog race etc were also conducted for primary level students of the school.
