NAHARLAGUN, Oct 31: A brave student of Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV), Aditya Gopal, drowned while attempting to save a friend in the ferocious Dikrong River today and his body was recovered later.

AdityaGopalA group of students of the Nirjuli-based VKV after playing football in a playground adjacent to the river went for a wash. While washing himself, Gopal saw one of his friends getting washed away and swung into action. He succeeded in his mission, but at the cost of his life. As ill luck would have it, he himself was washed away by the strong current of the river to his watery grave while the drowning boy was rescued.

A wave of shock gripped the VKV family and his near and dear ones, for Gopal, son of traffic inspector KVG Pillai and Gayatri, an art and culture department employee, who was studying in Class IX, was a very obedient and brilliant student.

Expressing deep shock at the unfortunate incident, VKV principal Jayan said: “We have lost a jewel. The entire VKV family is deeply shocked and has no words to express. It is an irreparable loss for the family and particularly the parents. May god rest his soul in eternal peace.”

Dikrong is also known as ‘Danger’ river for its very forceful currents, particularly during the winter when the water level goes down to hardly one or two feet.

The body was retrieved about 200 yards down the current, Doimukh police said, adding an unnatural death case was registered and the mortal remains were handed over to his family after conducting post mortem at General Hospital here.

The parents left for their native place Trivandrum Sunday night with the mortal remains for the last rites.
